Richard Raynsford

What first got you into Jiu-Jitsu?

I followed the UFC from the beginning after buying the first one on video cassette (VHS). I then started listening to the Joe Rogan podcast hearing him talk about the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu made me want to give it a go.

Who are your biggest influences in the sport?

Royce Gracie was the guy that surprised me the most. Submitting so many guys, many much bigger than him (when there were no weight classes) So I would say he was the first fighter who influenced me to start. I like the styles of Andrei Galvao and Marcelo Garcia

What does Jiu-Jitsu do for you? And how do you think it could help others?

Jiu-Jitsu definitely saved my life! It stopped me smoking, drinking, gave me a purpose, a whole new group of friends which are more like a family now. The benefits from Jiu Jitsu are endless I would recommend to anyone. It’s never too late to start.

What's your standout Jiu-Jitsu moment?

Stand out moment for me was my first trip to Brazil as a purple belt with the Nova Forca team and training in Sao Paulo where I met my wife.

What is your style? favourite guard/system/submission?

My style is pretty relaxed I will happily play from the bottom to half guard and favourite submission is the North South choke.

What do you enjoy about teaching and did you ever see yourself teaching?

I never really saw myself teaching but watching people improve and seeing the impact Jiu-Jitsu has on peoples lives makes me want to share my knowledge of the gentle art.

What are your goals for the club?

In the future I would like to see our club being one of the best in the South West with our own full time gym. With a place for people to come in relax and chat while the family trains. 150sqm plus of matted area Male and female Showers / toilets A strength and conditioning area. A cafe / soft play area for the very young. To see our club compete at Junior and adult levels. For Triton BJJ to be a respected and popular family club.

What do you think is different about our club?

Our club already has such a great atmosphere, everyone is super friendly and enthusiastic. There is a willingness to learn and put in the hours to improve. Everyone has been so helpful and the drive to get the club off and running has been fantastic. We are blessed to have not one but three black belts on the mats.
